"Respiratory disease prevention and treatment remains a long-term mission at primary-level healthcare units" emphasized Dr. Liu Lianfeng, Chief Physician and Director of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Shangrao Central Hospital in Jiangxi Province in China. "Many COPD patients delay treatment due to inconspicuous early symptoms, often reaching middle-to-late stages upon diagnosis, which severely impacts life quality. This necessitates dual efforts: enhancing public health education to improve awareness of early prevention, and promoting widespread pulmonary function screening. Through this training, we aim to upgrade our professional capabilities to better serve patients."
From 2025 May 12th to 14th, 50 primary-level healthcare units physicians of respiratory medicine, cardiopulmonary departments, and medical imaging department participated in the second session of this specialized training program.
The program's significance amid increasing respiratory infections and chronic disease burdens, enhancing standardized diagnosis and treatment capabilities for respiratory diseases is crucial for public health protection. Our multidimensional training approach—combining guideline interpretation, clinical case studies, and hands-on skill development—equips primary-level healthcare units physicians with solid foundations, broader perspectives, and improved clinical competencies.
The program curriculum featured:
1. Leading-edge respiratory disease guideline analyses, including The 2024 Chinese Guideline for Primary Care and Management of COPD and The 2024 Chinese Guideline for Primary Care Diagnosis and Management of Cough, etc.
2. Practical skill workshops on pulmonary function test (PFT) operation/interpretation and pulmonary nodule/lung cancer imaging diagnostics
3. Comprehensive disease management strategies spanning early screening to rehabilitation
4. Special modules on traditional Chinese medicine for respiratory disease prevention and treatment
This successful event marks significant progress in our National Center for Respiratory Medicine’s mission to decentralize high-quality medical resources and strengthen primary-level healthcare units’ capabilities of respiratory care .
